Pro Hierarchy is FileMaker Pro templates that introduce an universal method of storing, editing and displaying hierarchical data. There are two templates in the package: Simple Hierarchy and Advanced Hierarchy. They are both samples of the principle and templates you can customize to meet your needs.

The Simple Hierarchy contains minimal set of fields, relationships and scripts for creating and managing hierarchy. It works well as learning tool. The Advanced Hierarchy is more complex application designed to show some methods of working with hierarchical structures.

The documentation for the package is a practical implementation of the hierarchical techniques. It is created with ProHelp application which is based on the Simply Hierarchy template.

Features

• You can create and manage a hierarchical structure quite easy.
• The records are displayed in hierarchical tree. You can close the branches you don't need and expand another.
• You can see records in both 'flat' and 'hierarchical' views, sort them, and work with found set.
• The package includes Developer Notes that explains the hierarchical principle and some other techniques

Limitations

• The hierarchical tree doesn't remember open/close state of a string. So, if you expand several child branches and then close the parent record those branches won't show expanded when you open the parent again.
• The major limitation is the maximum number of records these templates can work with. It depends on the task you are solving. For example, it's possible to work with about 16,000 records in Advanced Hierarchy (after slight modifications). The maximum number of records in Simple Hierarchy is more difficult to calculate; at least it cannot contain more than 16,000 parents (records that have one or more child records).
